Touring Afghanistan in the late 1960s to early 1970s

Daniel Parsignault and Mary Lou talk about the major sites around Afghanistan. Viewers see some of Bigelow’s Super-8 film taken in 1968 to 1972. Some footage includes Buzkashi (polo with a headless goat), John Frankenheimer filming The Horseman and a flight through the valley to see the Buddhas of Bamiyan Valley, destroyed in March 2001 by the Taliban. Herat minarets and citadel walls, Blue Mosque in Mazar -i- Sharif and Ariana Airlines. RT: 20:05 Taped 11/16/2001.
Producer: Mary Lou Bigelow Director: Courtney Bowman

Buzkashi Boys is a unique narrative short film shot entirely on location in Afghanistan, offering a rare glimpse at another side of this war-torn country.

Set against the backdrop of buzkashi, a brutal game of horse polo played with a dead goat instead of a ball, the film follows two best friends, a street urchin and a blacksmith’s son, who struggle to reconcile dreams with duty as they make their way to manhood.

Buzkashi Boys was produced through the Afghan Film Project, a non-profit foundation formed to tell uniquely Afghan stories while building the capacity of Afghanistan’s fledgling film industry.

To complete the film they need to raise $25,000, so far they only have collected $15,112. So, if you can please donate money on this site to support them. Your donation will go towards paying for color grading, visual effects, mastering the film, and publicity.
